CFRP - bicycle frame


It was the goal of the development to realise economic serial production for a monocoque frame construction. Manual work that was originally large-scale (e.g. cutting fabric blanks) is planned to be dropped. The frame had to be designed for restraining properties.


For realising the monocoque frame concept a preform was developed using two preform parts wound around a foam core. The carbon fibres were aligned appropriately with the loading.

Impregnation with epoxy resin follows by means of the RTM-method. A particular designed placement pattern of the carbon fibres results in a unique fibre structure that is visible due to a completely transparent lacquer.

The CFRP-frame has a weight of 1.600 g with a stiffness (M) of 52 Nm/°.
