Tension-compression strut

Objective:

Tension-compression struts are stressed by very high inertial accelerations and decelerations, respectively. That is why the weight reduction is extreme important. The aim is to realise a weight reduction of 75 % compared to the original aluminium version.

Solution:

The developed tension-compression strut has a length of 250 mm and a hole diameter of 16 mm. The preform is made by TFP-technique and impregnated with epoxy resin by means of the RTM-method. Due to the optimal orientation of the fibres (radial at the load introduction areas) the Tension-Compression Strut is able to pick up a static load of 10 kN both in tension and compression with a weight of only 30 g.
